How to Install Malleable Iron Pipe Fittings

Installing malleable iron pipe fittings is as simple as attaching the regular couplings used with galvanized pipe. Ensure you have the correct sized tools to tighten and seal the malleable iron pipe fittings to each other or to galvanized pipe.

Step 1: Choose the Correct Size and Function

Choose from 90-degree elbow fittings, 45-degree fittings, T-junction fittings or a wide range of other malleable iron pipe fittings for the task. Ensure the diameter of the fitting matches the pipe sections it will connect.

Step 2: Cut the Pipe Section as Needed

Use the metal hacksaw to cut through copper or other pipe to install elbows and T-junction fittings. Always wear safety goggles for eye protection when sawing through metal.

Step 3: Clean the Pipe Junction

Wipe the pipe junction where you will install the malleable iron pipe fitting with a clean, dry rag to remove any corrosion, dust, or metal filings left after sawing through the pipe. Sand the end of the pipe to remove ragged metal.

Step 4: Attach the Pipe Fitting

Spread plumber's putty on the pipe and inside the pipe's threaded end. Slip the pipe fitting onto the pipe and secure it with either an adjustable or presized pipe wrench.
